Even though he was one of the last players to leave the Allianz Arena on Saturday evening, Arjen Robben was still beaming from ear to ear. The Dutch ace last started a game on 11 July 2010 – that was the World Cup final in South Africa – but in a 74-minute run-out against Kaiserslautern, he made a huge and memorable contribution to Bayern’s 5-1 victory.

“It's my first game from the start and we’ve won 5-1 – I’m delighted,” commented Robben, whose last start for FCB was in the Champions League final on 22 May last year. On the eve of his 27th birthday, Robben turned in a display best described as remarkable in the light of his long lay-off, and which was at times strongly reminiscent of his glorious form in the first half of 2010. “I’m just enjoying playing again,” continued Robben.

Christian Nerlinger said he was “specially delighted” by Robben’s “world-class display. Everyone can see he’s irreplaceable for us. Turning in a display like that after so long out is extraordinary and impressive,” continued the director of sport. “He has unbelievable footballing quality,” said Nerlinger, “and the mentality to keep pushing himself and inspiring the whole team. that’s’ why he’s so valuable for us.”

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge could only agree. “He was fantastic. We’re delighted he’s back, because we’ve all seen the quality he adds,” the FCB chairman enthused. “We really missed him in the first half of the season. If he’d not been out for six months, I’m absolutely certain we’d have more points than we do now,” Rummenigge observed.

Easing his way back
A week after his brief comeback in Wolfsburg, Robben was clearly brimming with desire on Saturday, although he struggled at first to find gaps in the disciplined Lautern rearguard. “I tried too hard in the first half. I wanted to show everyone I was back to my best,” Robben confessed. “But I settled down in the second half and it was a lot better.”

The Dutchman then brilliantly converted Thomas Müller ‘s slide-rule pass to open the scoring on the stroke of half-time. “Scoring again was a wonderful feeling. It's what you dream about, you feel the six months’ hard work were worth it,” the player beamed after his first goal since the DFB Cup final on 15 Mai 2010. Clearly buoyed by the goal, Arjen shifted up a gear in the second half and began causing Lautern all kinds of problems down the right.

The man opponents hate to see
“He’s absolutely world class, as we all saw again today,” observed Nerlinger, well aware that the player is by no means at his peak again yet. “It was my first start in six months, so there’s no way it can be 100 percent,” acknowledged Robben.

Captain Mark van Bommel agrees that Arjen still has plenty of potential to exploit. “He can do even better than that, I know this. He puts the frighteners on opponents, and he has the ability to beat two, three, four or even five defenders. That's why we’re all delighted he came to Bayern. I know all about his ability, so I’m not surprised by him.”

Robben: It was super

Dutch ace resumes squad programme at last

Almost as if the weather knew something special and memorable was happening, the driving snow of recent days stopped and a few rays of weak winter sunshine illuminated the Bayern training ground on Thursday, greeting Arjen Robben’s long-awaited return to action. The Dutch superstar took part in the scheduled squad training session for the first time this season - and was clearly thrilled to be back.

“That was super,” the 26-year-old informed fcbayern.de following the 75-minute workout, which also heralded the return of Bayern’s feared right-left wing combination: Franck Ribéry sent over the crosses from the left, and Robben from the right. “I’m part of the team again,” the Dutch ace enthused, “I’ve worked towards this for a long time, and I’ve worked a lot. Being back out on the pitch with the lads is an indescribable feeling.”

After reporting back to the club following his post-World Cup vacation, Robben was diagnosed with a five-centimetre hamstring tear. He was unable to train at all for three months, but was finally fit enough to jog in early November, almost six weeks ago. Even now, his sports rehabilitation programme is far from complete.

Work still to do
The player is not yet fit enough to take part in all the team exercise routines. Instead, he will gradually resume the full training burden under close supervision from the medical unit. “I’m not 100 percent fit yet,” Arjen acknowledged, “obviously, I still have a lot of work ahead of me.” The plan is for the winger to step up his fitness workload after the mid-season break, starting with the squad winter training camp in Qatar from 2-9 January. The player has set the first match of the second half of the campaign, the trip to Wolfsburg on 15 January, as a comeback target: “I hope I can play a part.”
